Satisfaction levels in relation to policing in Herefordshire are down, according to the latest findings from PCC John Campion’s perception survey.

For the period January to March 2025, the number of Herefordshire residents who said they felt West Mercia Police was doing an excellent or good job dropped 9% from 64% to 55% for the same period in 2024.

People living in Herefordshire also feel least informed about what West Mercia Police are doing in their local area (46%).

On a more positive note, Herefordshire residents are more likely to say anti-social behaviour is not much of a problem compared to the same period the previous year. With an increase of 4 percentage points from 81% to 85%.

Overall confidence in West Mercia Police in the county remains high at 78%, slightly down on 82% for the same period the previous year.

Other findings include –

  • Herefordshire residents are most confident they could access the police in both an emergency (93%) and a non-emergency (67%)
  • Residents of Herefordshire are most likely to feel their area was safe over the last 3 months compared to Shropshire and Worcestershire (91%)

Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said: “I’m committed to putting the voice of the public at the heart of policing and these perception surveys are one means by which I do that.

“Clearly action needs to be taken to both understand and address why satisfaction levels in West Mercia Police have dropped compared to the same quarter the previous year in Herefordshire.

“I regularly engage with the Chief Constable and will be raising this with him as an area of concern around which action needs to be taken urgently.”
