Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion is committed to ensuring that police custody is safe, and is encouraging local residents to volunteer as an Independent Custody Visitor in Shropshire.

PCC John Campion is calling on Shropshire residents who want to make a difference in their community.

The PCC operates an Independent Custody Visitor programme across West Mercia where volunteers visit police custody suites to ensure everything is meeting the expected standards. There is currently an opportunity for new volunteers in Shrewsbury and Malinsgate, where there is a total of 31 cells.

Volunteers will check on the welfare of detainees and that police officers and staff are following all the correct legal protocols.

PCC John Campion said: “We have a strong Independent Custody Visitor scheme in West Mercia and I am proud to support such an important volunteer led activity. The work these individuals do is crucial to the safety of those held in custody and for providing transparency and confidence in policing.

“Volunteering can be very rewarding and I encourage anyone who has thought about giving up some of their time to find out more by visiting my website.”
