PCC John Campion has welcomed a move which gives survivors of rape and serious sexual assault in West Mercia the right to have cases reviewed by a different prosecutor.

Under the current system, criminal cases can be stopped at any point if a prosecutor decides there is no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.

He said: “The vast majority of rape and sexual assault cases that go to court do not deliver convictions, so this pilot scheme helps give victims greater confidence in the system to deliver justice.

“The strain over our local courts is well documented, and whilst I absolutely welcome this move, the Government must back the criminal system to enable it to deliver greater outcomes by giving victims the answers they deserve and putting perpetrators behind bars.”
