The West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner has welcomed plans to give police pursuit drivers better legal protection, after a Home Office consultation showed the public overwhelming backed the proposals.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid announced the new plans, which will ensure an officer’s expert training would have to be taken into account if a prosecution was under consideration.

Commissioner John Campion said “Police pursuit drivers are highly trained and highly skilled, and I’m glad that the government with the backing of the public are introducing more legal protection for officers. This change will give officers more confidence to do their jobs more effectively, and reiterates how valued they are.”
