It is a key element of the Police and Crime Commissioner’s role to hold the Chief Constable to account on behalf of local communities.

The PCC’s Assurance and Accountability meetings – previously know as Holding to Account – take place twice a quarter. One is dedicated to a specific thematic area whilst the other is focused on the Force’s quarterly performance. The Assurance and Accountability programme also includes two public meetings per financial year where members of the public can submit questions for the Chief Constable.

In addition to the Performance, Thematic and Public meeting types the PCC and Chief Constable are equipped to address specific areas outside the pre-determined calendar through ‘Ad Hoc’ Assurance Briefings. These are conducted via email and enable the PCC to respond dynamically to emerging issues.
